Geico Increases Estimate for Hurricane Andrew Losses: Geico Corp. increased its estimated gross loss from Hurricane Andrew to $135 million from an earlier estimate of $80 million. The company said $85 million in claims had been paid so far. The after-tax loss, net of catastrophe reinsurance, is estimated at $46 million, which would reduce third-quarter earnings by 64 cents a share. The company reported earnings of 77 cents a share for the 1991 third quarter. Geico writes preferred risk automobile, homeowners, fire, personal liability and boat-owners insurance for government employees and military personnel.
