CITY CULTURE : Out of This World
The Watts Health Foundation, one of the few remaining organizations that sprung from the 1965 Watts riots, has for the past three years taken on the task of celebrating the cultures that make up its community.
The Watts Third World Arts Festival, at the health center at 10300 S. Compton Ave., has taken on the flavor of the center’s multicultural clientele. The nonprofit health care center annually serves 120,000 with programs for immigrants, babies and senior citizens.
The free festival, which runs today from noon to 6 p.m., will have Aztec, Philippine and American Indian dancers as well as music and art from the community.
“Besides it being a health care center during the year, this is what they do for the community, bring art to it,” said consultant Margo Classe. “This is a tribute to all of our cultures. It’s Third World.”
On the entertainment lineup are high school marching bands, gospel groups, singers from the Grace Korean Church, celebrity appearances, elementary school drill teams and live music.
Young artists will display their works with more-established artists and an array of international foods will be available.
The event attracted more than 6,500 last year.
