For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

*Use nitrogen in your compost pile to keep it working through the cooler fall temperatures.

* Help prevent the spreading of spores that cause peach leaf curl by picking up and removing all rotted fruit and decaying leaves from under peach and nectarine trees. Bag and remove debris from the garden.

*Once the soil cools plant daffodils every two to three weeks to prolong the bloom period next spring.

*Divide established perennials and plant new ones in the garden this month.

*Plant chrysanthemums this month for a brilliant show of flowers for Thanksgiving.
