Unemployment News Is Mixed: The jobless rate in September fell to 10.8% from 10.9% in July, but the ranks of the employed also fell by 43,800 to 7,687,700, the Bureau of Statistics reported. Economists had projected unemployment at 10.8% to 11.1%. But the employment results were worse than expected. Forecasts had ranged from a decline of 10,000 to a rise of 5,000.
