Los Alamitos Unified School District
Five candidates are running for three seats on the Board of Trustees of the Los Alamitos Unified School District in the Nov. 3 election.
Donna Artukovic
Age: 48.
Occupation: Incumbent; retired teacher.
Background: Appointed to the board in 1987; elected in 1988; served as clerk in 1990 and president in 1991; former teacher; worked for the 4th District PTA as director of legislation and leadership services.
Priorities: Wants community informed on all board actions; wants quality education in the face of dwindling state funds and to maximize the use of district assets; wants to continue good relationships with teachers.
Del Clark
Age: 54.
Occupation: Retired teacher; community volunteer.
Background: Taught at secondary and junior college levels; holds bachelor degrees from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) and Cal State Long Beach.
Priorities: Prefers to make budget cuts in administration and not classroom programs; wants school property preserved for future use; favors term limits for members of the school board.
Arthur T. Genet
Age: 58.
Occupation: Incumbent; engineering management.
Background: Has served on the board for nine years, two as president; served on the local Special Education Governing Board for six years; alternate member of Regional Occupation Governing Board; member of the county Committee on School District Reorganization.
Priorities: Emphasizes fiscal responsibility and long-range planning; wants to continue to provide highest quality and diversity in education; wants to maintain community involvement in the education of children.
Ray LeCompte
Age: 57.
Occupation: Airline pilot.
Background: Rossmoor resident for 30 years; active school booster and soccer coach; international airline pilot for 28 years.
Priorities: Wants board made up of people with “fresh ideas”; wants to retain all school properties; vows never to make a decision “that is not in the best interest of the students and the taxpayers who support them.”
Virginia F. Wilson
Age: 52.
Occupation: Incumbent; shopping center owner/manager; community volunteer.
Background: Has served on the school board for 15 years; member of the California School Board Assn. Delegate Assembly; vice president-clerk of the North Orange County Regional Occupational Program; holds marketing degree from USC.
Priorities: Find long-term solution to funding problems; wants smaller class sizes; wants to maximize income for the district, including leasing of school properties; wants to continue the positive board-teacher relationship; supports a strong curriculum.
