State Farm Boosts Estimated Andrew Loss: State Farm Insurance, the insurance company with the biggest stake in Florida, has increased its estimated loss from damage caused by Hurricane Andrew by more than 30% to $2.1 billion. The new estimate, up from its $1.6-billion estimate released Sept. 9, is the highest so far of any insurance company. Based on 145,149 claims inspected in Florida and Louisiana, it stems from State Farm’s discovery that damage was worse than originally anticipated, a company spokesman said. The initial estimate assumed that the Florida homes met wind-resistance building codes, when in fact many did not, the spokesman said.
