TENNIS ROUNDUP : Holm Upsets No. 3 Becker in Third Round at Tokyo

Third-seeded Boris Becker was eliminated from the $1.1-million Seiko Super tournament at Tokyo on Thursday, losing to 14th-seeded Henrik Holm, 6-1, 6-2.

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg, the defending champion, advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Patrick McEnroe, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) on the artificial surface at Tokyo’s Metropolitan Gymnasium.

Becker called Holm’s play flawless.

The Swede Holm said after the match: “It was the biggest win in all my life. Boris is a good indoor player so it’s good to beat him.”

In other third-round matches, second-seeded Michael Chang defeated Jonathan Stark, 6-0, 6-7 (5-7), 6-0; fourth-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia defeated Niclas Kroon of Sweden, 6-4, 6-2, and fifth-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia beat Wally Masur of Australia, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Sixth-seeded Wayne Ferreira of South Africa defeated Chris Pridham of Canada, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4, and Kenny Thorne beat seventh-seeded Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands, 6-3, 7-6 (7-0).

Top-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria and fifth-seeded Jeff Tarango defeated Israeli players to advance to the semifinals of the Riklis Israel Tennis Center Classic at Tel Aviv.

Muster, ranked 19th in the world, defeated unseeded Gilad Bloom, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4. Bloom, ranked 143rd, had reached the quarterfinals by upsetting Jimmy Connors on Wednesday.

Tarango defeated third-seeded Amos Mansdorf, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6.

In other quarterfinals, Stephane Simian of France defeated Marcos Ondruska of South Africa, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, and Joao Cunha-Silva of Portugal beat Richard Matuszewski, 6-4, 7-5.

Muster will play Tarango and Cunha-Silva will play Simian in today’s semifinals.

Third-seeded Martina Navratilova advanced to the quarterfinals of the Porsche Grand Prix women’s tournament at Filderstadt, Germany, defeating Veronika Martinek of Germany, 6-4, 6-1.

Navratilova, who has won the tournament five times, will play No. 7 Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia. Sukova defeated countrywoman Radka Zrubakova, 6-4, 6-4.

Fourth-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez defeated Natalia Zvereva of Belarus, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2. Fernandez’s opponent will be the 1991 champion, fifth-seeded Anke Huber of Germany.

Huber, who upset Navratilova last year in the finals, won her match by default. Leila Meskhi of Georgia won the first set, 6-4, but then withdrew because of flu, leading, 4-0, in the second set.
