U.S. Women’s Volleyball Team Defeated

The women’s U.S. national volleyball team dropped a 15-5, 15-9, 15-5 match to China in the Hong Kong Cup Friday.

Tammy Liley, two-time Olympian, recorded 12 kills. Teammates Daiva Tomkus and Janet Cobbs added seven and six kills, respectively. The U.S. team faces Cuba today, with China playing the Commonwealth of Independent States.

San Diego State was routed by host Brigham Young, 15-8, 15-10, 15-11, in front of 2,119 at the Field House in Provo, Utah. Gracie Schutt had 15 kills and Kori Ermigart 10 for the Aztecs, who fell to 15-5, 1-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. BYU is 13-3, 4-0.

Trailing 2-0, LaVerne rallied to take a 14-16, 12-15, 15-1, 15-6, 15-10 nonconference victory over visiting UC San Diego. Megan Lucas and Laura Kranz each had nine kills to pace the ninth-ranked Tritons (6-13). No. 13 LaVerne is 10-7.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The U.S. national team dropped the first match of its five-match series against the Japanese with 15-10, 15-10, 15-7 loss in Minneapolis. The U.S. team still holds a 2-1 lead in the series going into today’s match at Madison Square Garden.

Bob Samuelson had a team-high 22 kills and added two blocks to the American effort. Steve Timmons, who is playing on the U.S. portion of the tour, contributed 10 kills and four blocks. The fifth match is Tuesday in St. Louis. Japan won all three matches of a three-match tour in Japan.

MEN’S SOCCER

Eighteenth-ranked USD upset West Coast Conference-champion University of San Francisco, 2-1, at Negoesco Stadium in San Francisco. With 9:27 remaining in regulation, USD’s Chuggar Adair faked a cross and scored unassisted from medium range.

The Dons (7-5-1, 1-2) took an early lead in the first half, but the Toreros (12-3, 3-0) came back three minutes into the second half when Alex Streick shot and scored off assists by Kevin Arthur and Guillermo Jara from close range. USD’s remaining WCC games are at home.
