MONTEREY PARK : EPA Proposes Settlement With Cities on Landfill

Share

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tuesday announced a proposed settlement with 10 Southern California cities regarding the disposal of municipal solid waste in a Monterey Park landfill on the Superfund list.

The cities that signed the pending settlement involving the Operating Industries Inc. landfill are Bell Gardens, Beverly Hills, El Monte, Huntington Park, La Puente, Norwalk, Paramount, San Marino, Sierra Madre and South El Monte.

“This settlement resolves the liability of these cities for all costs associated with the landfill and represents an important milestone in OII’s enforcement history,” said Jeff Zelikson, EPA’s regional hazardous waste management director. EPA, the state and groups of companies that disposed of industrial waste at Operating Industries reached three earlier settlements valued at about $200 million to perform cleanup actions at the site. The settlement is worth a total of about $382,000. The 10 cities sent very small quantities of municipal solid waste to the site, Zelikson said.
