Share

Will Rogers Elementary School won a $500,000 grant from the state Department of Education to implement a comprehensive, five-year restructuring plan.

The plan seeks to improve curriculum and instruction, empower teachers and administrators to make decisions, streamline operations, and increase community involvement. It was developed by school and district staff, district board members and community leaders.

According to the plan, the library will be equipped with the latest in media technology. Already, students have begun using electronic encyclopedias, computerized reading and electronic portfolios to keep track of their work.

A grouping method will be introduced. Students across all grade levels will belong to “families” throughout elementary school. Family leaders, a teacher and another staff member, will act as mentors and if necessary, provide communication between the student’s family and the school.

In the third year of the plan, the school will begin a parent education program. In the fourth year, students will be asked to participate in community-service projects.
