Donald Taylor; Promoted Times Camp Fund

Share

Donald R. Taylor, a public relations executive who for many years promoted the annual Times Camp Fund, has died.

Taylor also edited company publications in the 1940s and 1950s, including Among Ourselves for employees and Young Timers for the newspaper boys who delivered the paper. He died Saturday in a Glendale hospital after what his family described as a lingering illness. He was 87.

Taylor came to The Times in 1933 and became editor of Among Ourselves in 1944 when it resumed publication after a 10-year hiatus caused by the Depression.

That same year, the Times Camp Fund was started with a donation from the newspaper. Taylor was put in charge of promoting the fund, which last summer raised more than $850,000 to send needy children to summer camp.

Taylor enlisted the support of many communities in his fund-raising efforts, going so far as to have children set up lemonade stands and send a percentage of their profits to help other children.

Taylor was also editor of The Merchandiser and Keeping Up With The Times, publications used as sales devices. Over the years, his various publications all received Southern California or national awards. He retired in 1970.

He is survived by a son, Thomas Russell Taylor, and two daughters, Elizabeth Glen Taylor and Priscilla Taylor.
