Clinton and Vietnam

Re “My Friend Died for Bill Clinton,” by Jack Estes, Commentary, Oct. 20:

Estes had it half right when he said his friend, Gerny, died for Bill Clinton. Gerny died for all of us. He did not die in place of Clinton! I served in the military for six years during the Vietnam era, including two campaigns of the Vietnam War. I fought, as did hundreds of thousands of others, so that Clinton, Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney, Sen. Phil Gramm and others could exercise their right to protest, legally avoid the draft, etc. I enlisted at age 19 because I was “too old” to be placed on the waiting list for the National Guard (I didn’t know Dan Quayle’s dad).
