Bulgaria Leader Asked to Form a New Cabinet
The Union of Democratic Forces, which resigned from the Bulgarian government Wednesday after losing a parliamentary confidence vote, asked its leader, Philip Dimitrov, to form a new government Thursday.
After an emergency meeting, the UDF coalition renominated Dimitrov to make an offer to President Zhelyu Zhelev to form a new government.
Prime Minister Dimitrov announced the resignation of his 11-month-old Cabinet on Wednesday after Parliament’s 120-111 no-confidence vote. Nine deputies of the 240-seat chamber were not present during the vote.
Dimitrov had called the confidence vote after the government was accused of failing to prevent economic collapse. In addition, Bulgarian intelligence officials alleged that the government had tried to sell arms to the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia.
