World IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : Paper Says Troops Entered Angola
A South African newspaper said the country’s troops entered Angola as part of a plan by Pretoria to pressure President Jose Eduardo dos Santos to share power with the opposition UNITA movement. The anti-apartheid New Nation newspaper, which gave no source for its report, said soldiers of the army’s 32nd Battalion backed by 10 helicopters entered southern Angola during the week “in an apparent anticipation of a resumption of hostilities.” A spokesman for Foreign Minister Roelof F. (Pik) Botha said he would hold a news conference in Pretoria today.
