From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Muslim fundamentalists won a toehold in Egyptian local governments after mounting their first electoral challenge in five years. Early results from voting for local and provincial councils showed the Socialist Labor Party, under whose flag the officially illegal Muslim Brotherhood campaigned, had won 36 contests. The other main opposition party, the liberal Wafd, won 11. The government’s own National Democratic Party won 298 of the 421 contests. It had already won 2,348 contests unopposed.
