From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A convoy of 34 trucks carrying American wheat to starving Somalis was ambushed by bandits, and part of the shipment was stolen near the south-central town of Baidoa. The convoy’s armed guards and a security force organized by people in Baidoa fought back, allowing all but six of the trucks to escape, aid officials said. Four of the Somalis hired as guards and drivers for the convoy reportedly were killed and five wounded.
