Offensive to Seniors

Share

There are several points about the article “Casserole Brigade Chases Potluck of Love” (Nov. 2) that I found to be untrue and offensive to all residents of Leisure Village.

The author used a parody by Gertrude Kern to classify all single ladies of Leisure Village. By its very nature, a parody is meant to exaggerate for comedic purposes. If there is, or ever was, any lady in Leisure Village who brought a casserole to a bereaved gentleman in Leisure Village, the motive was surely primarily compassion for his sorrow and loss.

And speaking of compassion, the article demonstrates little or no compassion for the problems of the elderly person, man or woman. It demeans and pokes fun at some of the kindest and nicest people residing in Ventura County, the residents both single and married of Leisure Village.

I have observed the widowed men and women of this community for the seven years that I have been living in Leisure Village and I am only filled with admiration for their coping skills in dealing with the loss of loved persons in their lives. Some cope by becoming more active in charitable causes, others by returning to family outside of Leisure Village, still others by meeting men or women in like circumstances who can understand their sorrow and the struggle it is to create a new life without a partner. The majority behave with dignity and grace that is too often missing from your graceless and tasteless article.
