Tuba Sounds Added Note

I believe the letter from Jon K. Evans regarding your paper’s caption under the “Tubas at CSUN,” was technically flawed (“Sousaphone is No Tuba,” Letters to the Editor, Times Valley Edition, Nov. 8).

Evans is correct in identifying the instruments as sousaphones, but I believe he erred in stating that they are not tubas.

A sousaphone is a type of tuba--much like a girl is a type of swimmer.

To state that a girl is not a swimmer because she does not look like a boy swimmer is not only incorrect but shows alarming chauvinism.

(It can also louse up your social life).

Webster’s unabridged clearly states a sousaphone is a large circular tuba with the bell flared to the front.
