Editor’s note: The San Diego County town of Alpine was in the news in recent months because of an apparent vigilante attack on a group of migrant workers following an accusation of rape (which the district attorney later declined to prosecute) against a migrant. The following editorial indirectly concerns issues raised by the attack and its aftermath.

There have been differences between Democrats’ and Republicans’ foreign policy. The Republican administration has always been keen to use force, and to protect the present governments no matter how despotic. The latest example of such policy is the secret support given by the Ronald Reagan and George Bush governments to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The fact is that the tendency to pursue a policy to secure human rights by the Democrats has always brought hopes to the nations that are ruled by dictators.
