LIMA : Controversial Election

Share

Fresh from what he says was a coup attempt last week aimed at killing him, Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has pledged to go forward with elections Sunday for a constituent congress aimed at re-establishing a balance of powers in Peru. He suspended constitutional rule last April.

Fujimori has accused “political interests” of being behind the coup attempt, but opposition politicians contend the whole story is an attempt to discredit them and to distract public opinion from the real issues of the campaign.

The Peruvian leader said 20 to 25 retired and active military officers had been captured in connection with the coup attempt.
