World IN BRIEF : CANADA : 80 in Brainwashing Study to Be Paid
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Canada has agreed to compensate scores of people used as human guinea pigs a generation ago in brainwashing experiments that were financed in part by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. The $6.28-million settlement will be divided among about 80 people, the announcement said. One official in Montreal said that the federal government is not admitting any legal liability or responsibility for damage done to the subjects, and is making the payments on humanitarian grounds.
