End of an Era: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is dropping short documentaries and live-action shorts from Oscar consideration beginning with the 1993 Academy Award year. The academy’s board of governors took the action on the basis that these forms “have long ceased to reflect the realities of theatrical motion picture exhibition.”
