EXPLORING THE WORLD OF INSECTS: The Equinox Guide to Insect Behaviour by Adrian Forsyth (Camden House: $9.95; 64 pp., paperback original). This handsome little book offers non-scientists an introduction to the basics of entomology. Forsyth includes some of the usual staggering numbers--800,000 species of insects have been identified, and estimates of the total number range from three million to 30 million. But most of the text is devoted to explanations of the behavior of the often unwelcome visitors readers find in their gardens and window boxes. Some of the fantastic creatures in the color photographs might have inspired the phrase about “long-leggedy beasties” in the old Irish blessing.
