Lifting Ban on Gays in Military

Share

In response to “Nunn, Dole See Perils in Lifting Military Gay Ban,” Nov. 16:

Help me out. I’m a secure, happily married grandparent. Democratic Sen. Sam Nunn (chairman of the Armed Services Committee) may be expressing an unbiased concern in “warning of possible violence against gays and lesbians in the service,” not issuing a threat. Yet regardless of his private motives, his warning implies a service rife with hypocrites who would, by attacking fellow Americans, betray the America they’re sworn to defend. Doesn’t this suggest traitors to the Land of the Free? To the extent that this implication might actually be an accurate reflection of reality, another question begging to be asked is: What, pray, are such uniformed turncoats patriotic about? Why are they there--to honor a free nation with their service or compensate their apparently uncertain sexuality?
