Distribution Deal: Toshiba America’s computer systems division in Irvine has signed a deal to distribute its portable computers in the United States through Ingram Micro Inc., the world’s largest personal computer distributor.

The agreement, effective Dec. 1, opens up new channels of distribution for Toshiba’s portable computers, which are small enough to be carried in briefcases.

The deal also brings Toshiba full circle with Ingram, which distributed Toshiba’s computers in the mid-1980s. Toshiba dropped Ingram in 1989 and signed up rival Merisel Inc. in El Segundo as its distributor. A year later it turned to Tech Data Corp. in Clearwater, Fla.

Tech Data will still distribute PCs for Toshiba, but the new agreement will give Toshiba access to additional retailers served by Ingram. Ingram, based in Santa Ana, reaches more than 60,000 sellers of computers worldwide.
