COUNTYWIDE : 1992 Toys-for-Tots Campaign Begins

The annual Toys-for-Tots Drive, which funnels Christmas toys to needy Ventura County children, is under way.

Sponsored by the Marine Corps Reserve, the annual drive collects toys that will be distributed by local charities to poor, ill or institutionalized children throughout the county.

“Without us intervening, there’s probably a pretty good chance they wouldn’t get any toys for Christmas,” said Marine Capt. Scott Morton.

Morton runs the Marine Corps Reserve Center at Port Hueneme, which heads the drive locally.

Last year, the campaign collected about 13,000 toys, he said.

The donated toys should be new, unwrapped and have at least a $5 value, said John Miranda, leader of the Ventura County detachment of the Marine Corps League, which is helping conduct the drive.

All types of toys for any age child will be accepted, Miranda said.

Donated toys can be dropped off at fire stations throughout the county or at one of dozens of businesses participating in the campaign.

For locations of drop-off sites, call the Marine Corps Reserve Center at 982-4345 or Miranda at 523-9523.
