GARDEN GROVE : Trash Fee Increase in Effect Today
Trash fees will climb to $12.30 a month for most residents starting today.
Residents, however, will not officially learn about the $1.08 increase until bills arrive later this week because sanitary district officials plan to save the $8,000 it would cost to mail notices.
Garden Grove Sanitary District General Manager Ronald Cates said the trash collection fee is rising 9.63% because the state has appropriated some property tax revenue special districts had received.
Cates said the district has been receiving $900,000 annually in property taxes since 1978. This year, however, the state took $349,549 of that.
The Garden Grove Sanitary District serves 27,000 residences east of Knott Street, about 80% of the homes in Garden Grove. It also serves a portion of Westminster and several scattered pockets of unincorporated Orange County.
District officials decided not to send notice of the fee increase because it would be a waste of money to tell the residents “more bad news,” he said.
The bills will state that the increase was caused by the state’s shifting the tax money to schools.
The district also is responsible for city sewer operations. But sewers are funded by separate property taxes, and there will be no sewer fee hikes, he said.
