Fire caused $1.25-million damage to a 6,000-square-foot home Monday night, triggered by a fireplace with no spark arrester, authorities said.

The fire, which began at 6:40 p.m. in the house on Daniel Lane, took 60 firefighters an hour to control.

Owner Ronald Daniel was home with his daughter and granddaughter when neighbors spotted the fire on the roof and went to warn them. No one was injured.

Because the house had a shake roof, “the fire burned quickly and fast,” said Orange County Fire Department spokesperson Kathleen Cha.

The home, in an equestrian neighborhood, backs into a wooded area.

“What this family has done, which is what saved this fire from spreading, is that the whole backside the of house had been cleared of vegetation and weeds,” Cha said. “They had done that very well up to almost 200 feet. That is significant because pieces of roofing materials were falling off.
