More than $16,000 was raised for local AIDS groups through activities connected with Tuesday’s Day Without Art observance, although some events were far more successful than others.

A highly touted collaboration by major arts groups near the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa--a lunchtime outdoor concert involving members of the Kirov Ballet, the Orange County Philharmonic Society, Opera Pacific, the Pacific Symphony, the Pacific Chorale, the Master Chorale of Orange County and Ballet Pacifica--drew only about 150 people and raised only about $200 for the AIDS Services Foundation of Orange County, according to early estimates.

However, the services foundation will be getting $600 raised during dramatic readings at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa; $200 from the Cafe on the Lakes, a nearby restaurant that sold lunches to people attending the readings and the outdoor concert; and $300 raised during a concert at the Fullerton Museum Center.

By far the most successful event was “Lagunatics,” an original revue presented Monday by the Laguna Playhouse for the benefit of Laguna Shanti, a financially troubled AIDS support group. A Shanti official said the show raised about $15,000.
