Gays in Military

Share

I served in Vietnam from March, 1967, through September, 1968. I was wounded three times. I was decorated for valor five times--three times by the U.S. government and twice by the government of South Vietnam.

To be certain, I took lives as a matter of self-preservation. But I also saved lives, many lives, by doing my job and doing it well.

I have only one thing I really want to say about all of this. I was then and am now gay. I served with honor, I did my best, and I never ever made my sexuality a part of my service to my country. With or without the blessings of the powers that be, gay men and lesbian women will continue to serve with distinction, pride and, in times of trial, with heroism and courage.
