Massachusetts Town’s Snafu Costs Man a Tree

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — The 25-foot municipal Christmas tree set up in front of the Firehouse Museum is all too familiar to Charles Fournier.
South Hadley town officials say workers mistakenly chopped down the blue spruce that had been in Fournier’s front yard. They thought it belonged to one of his neighbors, who had offered to donate a tree to the town.
Fournier said he was stunned when he returned home last week to find the tree gone. “I walked around my pickup truck and thought, ‘My tree’s gone. This can’t be happening,’ ” he said.
When he got inside he had a message on his answering machine from the town light department saying they had “made a mistake and felt terrible.”
