Genetic Test Trees Stolen in Oregon
Someone has stolen some special Christmas trees from the Rogue River National Forest in southern Oregon.
U.S. Forest Service officials say that thieves, apparently cutting Christmas trees, broke through a fence last weekend and took 140 experimental trees from a plot where foresters were growing a genetically superior forest.
The trees were among 5,200 planted in 1981 from seeds collected from trees with the most desirable characteristics for timber production. Seeds from the best trees were to be harvested in two years.
