LOS ANGELES : Campaign Seeks to Recruit Minority Marrow Donors
A campaign to increase the number of potential minority bone marrow donors will be held today at Jack’s Health and Fitness Center, 5364 Wilshire Blvd. Health experts will take small blood samples from volunteers who wish to be enrolled in the donor registry.
The Share Life Marrow-Thon aims to increase the number of minorities enrolled in the national bone marrow registry to 1 million by 1994.
Now, the chances for an ethnic minority to find a match with a donor group are almost zero because the percentage of minority donors in the national registry is very small, said Dr. Toni Yancey, an adjunct assistant professor at the UCLA School of Public Health.
The Share Life Marrow-Thon will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Health experts will be available to provide information about foods, exercises, screening tests, and environmental and occupational safety precautions that can reduce the risk of cancer.
