Jewelle Taylor Gibbs, who has studied the plight of young black men, has become the first black woman to be named to an endowed chair within the University of California system. An endowed chair is a position paid for through an endowment to the university. It also provides guaranteed research funds. Gibbs, a UC Berkeley professor, has edited the book “Young, Black and Male in America: An Endangered Species,” and co-authored “Children of Color: Psychological Interventions With Minority Youth.” She is currently working on a study comparing the problems of black youths in England with their U.S. counterparts.
