Government Cautious With Beijing: Taiwan is keeping a low profile in the dispute between Hong Kong and China over democratic reforms in the British colony so as not to antagonize Beijing, a government spokesman said. “We don’t want to give mainland China any excuse to say that Taiwan and Hong Kong are linking together against Beijing,” said Jason Hu, director general of the Government Information Office. “There’s nothing wrong in doing so if we’re protecting human rights, of course,” he said. “But we somehow believe that if we don’t do this carefully, we might weaken (Hong Kong) Gov. (Chris) Patten’s position.”
