PORT HUENEME : 600 Seabees Pack for Somalia Assignment

A battalion of 600 Seabees at Port Hueneme spent Sunday packing for Somalia.

Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40, one of four units stationed at the Port Hueneme Naval Construction Battalion Center, began readying bulldozers, tools and other construction equipment for shipment as part of the relief effort to the war-torn African country, said base spokeswoman Linda Wadley.

The battalion was one of two Navy units from Southern California alerted this weekend that they may be called to join the U. S.-led military operation in Somalia, Wadley said.

“We are at this time making preparations,” Wadley said. Seabees build bridges, airstrips, roads, camps and other construction projects to assist the military efforts of U. S. Marines and Navy troops. The U. S. plans this week to begin sending up to 27,000 troops to restore order and clear the way for international relief efforts in Somalia.
