Abortion and Sex Crimes

Share

In response to “Women Reap the Rewards of ‘Roe’ in Abuse,” by George Weigel, Column Right, Nov. 29:

The rationale for his opposition to legal abortion rests on the absurd theory that men would refrain from practicing sexual harassment if they believed their actions would produce burdensome offspring, ergo, legal abortion gives men license to behave badly.

The major flaw among many in his deplorable thesis is that it would only hold true if it were the harassers, not the women, who could choose to abort the inconvenient results. I suppose the same could be said for condoms, diaphragms and the Pill, in that they, too, help prevent pregnancy. Perhaps Weigel takes such concern for the condition of modern women he would like to have all forms of birth control outlawed in order to “protect” us from suffering unwanted advances.

I would prefer to work toward the day that men treat me respectfully because I am another human being living on this Earth, and as such ought to be accorded comparable rights to life, liberty, etc. That would surpass living in a society that views men as libidinous beasts and where I have only my fertility with which to futilely try to bludgeon and blackmail them into courteous behavior.

I’m afraid Weigel has far less faith in men than do most of the feminists he is attempting to undermine. The notion of Weigel having anything remotely to do with ethics and public policy is a very depressing one.
