Memorial Services Saturday for Dr. Cortland Myers III

Memorial services will be held Saturday for Dr. Cortland Myers III, the first head of UC Irvine’s dermatology program and a staff member at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange for more than three decades.

Myers died Nov. 24 of Lou Gehrig’s disease at Tustin Community Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment. He was 69.

A native of Los Angeles, Myers was a graduate of the USC School of Medicine. He also studied at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He was a longtime member of the North Santa Ana Kiwanis Club and past president of the Sea and Sage Audubon Society of Orange County and the Metropolitan Dermatological Society of Los Angeles. During the 1950s, he headed the dermatology program of the Air Force.

Myers, who visited more than 100 countries in his lifetime, was known for his lectures on his expeditions.

“Cortland was a dedicated teacher, an inspired physician and a caring member of the Orange County community for many, many years,” Greg Fairley, a good friend, said Monday. “His students, colleagues and friends will remember his many contributions to the community.”

Myers is survived by a brother, Richard Hughes Myers of La Canada; nephews Richard Hughes Myers Jr. of La Canada, Steven D. Myers of Honolulu and Cortland Myers IV of Frazier Park, and nieces Anne Myers Dwyer of Acton and Nancy Myers Blouin of Bakersfield.

Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Corona del Mar.
