The comparison of the perceptions of the role of former Presidents Carter and Nixon was inescapable on your Nov. 27 editorial page--”Carter’s Message: Never Give Up” and six letters, “Ruling on Nixon Papers.” Carter sets a high standard as he continues to serve his country and the world by using his prestige as ex-President to fight poverty, focus attention on the injustice of the “two Americas” and dig in personally to help build housing for the homeless.
Nixon, in winning his legal battle with the Justice Department, now seeks millions of taxpayer dollars for his illegally recorded tapes. Nixon appears motivated by the same self-serving greed that forced him to resign from office to avoid impeachment.
In the final ranking of presidents and their accomplishments, history will hopefully place heavy emphasis on the measure of the man: his ethics, his character and his lifetime contribution to the welfare of his nation and the world.
