Sierra Madre : Job Solicitation Ordinance

Share

An ordinance prohibiting solicitation of jobs by day laborers from prospective employers in motor vehicles was introduced during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

The measure is aimed at preventing job-seekers from gathering in public parks and other areas in downtown Sierra Madre to obtain work from residents and professional contractors.

No action was taken on the item Tuesday, but council members Orville L. (Lee) Cline and Clem L. Bartolai said public comments, other than those already aired at previous council meetings, will be sought.

The ordinance is available for review at the Sierra Madre Public Library and at City Hall.

Both MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) and the American Civil Liberties Union have filed letters of concern about the proposed ordinance, and the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles has indicated that it will challenge the measure in court.
