Whittier : Motels Ordered to Remove Illegally Installed Kitchens

Share

Some Whittier hotel and motel rooms have been illegally converted into apartments, city officials said this week, prompting the City Council to consider imposing tougher regulations.

City officials said the Whittier Inn and Lambert Inn violated city codes when they turned hotel rooms into apartments by installing small kitchens.

The two motels have been ordered to remove the kitchens.

In addition, the council directed city officials to investigate the possibility of amending zoning regulations to prohibit kitchens in all hotels. Some hotel rooms legally have kitchens because they were built before current codes were adopted.

Council members also requested a report from the Police Department to determine whether criminal activity has been associated with the motels.
