STANTON : Ban on Fireworks Sale Lifted--in Part

Share

A year after local nonprofit groups told the City Council that they want to raise money by selling so-called safe-and-sane fireworks, the council this week voted 3 to 2 to allow their sale.

In its vote, the council decided to approve permits for fireworks sales only for nonprofit organizations within Stanton.

Council member Joe V. Harris and Mayor Don Martinez voted to continue the ban against all fireworks. The council had banned all fireworks in 1989.

“I’m saddened that our religious and civic groups are pitted against public safety,” Martinez said Tuesday night. “I’m saddened that we should have to waive public safety to raise a few dollars.”

Representatives from the County Fire Department told the council that there are no truly safe fireworks. “They’re a source of ignition; there’s no question about that,” Assistant Chief Robert H. Hennessey said after speaking to the council.

A Sacramento public relations firm represented two makers of “safe-and-sane” fireworks at the meeting and disputed the Fire Department’s warning.
