Short of cash, Cabell County commissioners are offering employees hams and turkeys this year instead of their normal Christmas bonuses.

The commission voted Monday to forgo the $500 bonuses typically given to employees each December. The bonuses would cost about $130,000, while the turkeys and hams will cost about $4,000, Administrator G. J. Jordan said.

Some county workers said the decision did not leave them in a holiday spirit.

Capt. Johnny Bowman, head corrections officer at the Cabell County Jail, said he would give his children the best Christmas possible, but the ham would be no substitute for cash.

“I might feed them, but I can’t buy them any presents,” he said.
