City of Hope Gets $452,000 for Fellowship

City of Hope National Medical Center received $452,000 raised at a black-tie gala honoring Richard (Rick) M. Powell, president and chief operating officer of the Powell Co. Proceeds will establish a research fellowship in Powell’s name. The Nov. 15 benefit, hosted by Home Furnishings Industry Chapter, was attended by more than 800 guests at the Century Plaza. Bill Benton, Andrew Cohen, Stan Haptor and Norman Zorel were co-chairs.

The French Foundation for Alzheimer Research held its fifth annual “A Day at the Races” Nov. 14 at Hollywood Park. The benefit netted $12,000 for the foundation, which, since its founding in 1983, has raised more than $3.5 million. Ann Shane and Sheila Yousem were event co-chairs.

Mary Magdalene Project Inc. raised $42,885 at its “Dream Weaver” benefit dinner and auction Nov. 1. The organization, founded in 1980, helps prostitutes to change their lives through long-term, intensive retraining. Johnny Mountain, KABC-TV weatherman, was auctioneer. Ann Martin, KABC-TV news anchor, was honorary chair.

Friends of the Wellness Community-Westside raised $75,000 at the Oct. 18 Cirque du Soleil benefit gala. The community offers free emotional support to cancer patients and their families, and has recently expanded its services to adolescents and to establish women’s breast and ovarian cancer networking groups.

A Challenge for Charity, sponsored by UCLA’s Anderson Graduate School of Management, has raised $20,000 for the Special Olympics through the efforts of students from six schools. Student fund-raisers included auctions and sports and business events.

University of Judaism’s scholarship fund received $25,000, proceeds of the Nov. 9 Tishman Realty & Construction Golf Classic. The event was hosted by the Moriah Society, the university’s real estate industry support group. Other sponsors were Bobrow/Thomas Architects, Fidelity National Title, Pacific Title, Stewart Title, Zenith Insurance Co. and American Express Bank International. Frank D. Hickman and Mark Ross were co-chairs. Actor Gene Barry was guest host.

Assistance League of Southern California has raised more than $45,000 at three events, including its October “Design House ’92.” Proceeds will benefit the league’s 10 community service agencies, which help about 74,000 local children and adults annually.
