About 80 prisoners at the 2,300-inmate penitentiary here burned mattresses and smashed TV sets during a riot Thursday, but no one was injured, according to news reports.

Authorities said the rioters were brought under control after they destroyed furniture, yanked telephone cables out of walls and caused other damage during a protest over alleged mistreatment and poor food.

About 100 armed police officers were called in to quell the riot and traffic on a street beside the prison was closed after inmates began throwing metal bars and other objects onto it, the Excelsior news agency reported.
