ANTELOPE VALLEY : Fair Board Delays Vote on Car Racing
The Antelope Valley Fair board of directors Thursday delayed until next month a decision on whether to allow weekly stock-car racing next year at the fairgrounds.
Supporters of the raceway say it could bring nearly $40 million annually into the local economy, but opponents say it will lower property values and create crime and excessive noise.
The board is expected to vote Jan. 14 on a $500,000 proposal by Acton-based RIZE Productions to build a 3/8-mile clay track atop the dirt track at the grandstand to improve it as an auto raceway.
The board delayed its decision after questions were raised by board members about their legal options.
A board committee had recommended rejection of a report that concluded the project would have no significant environmental effect. Committee chairman Randy Jaqua said that there were too many unanswered questions to go forward with the project and that RIZE had not responded promptly to public concerns about environmental effects.
