A unidentified man leaped to his death from the Coronado Bay Bridge Sunday afternoon, police said.

A Coast Guard boat retrieved the body about 10 minutes after the man plunged more than 200 feet, authorities said.

California Department of Transportation workers had tried to talk him into a Caltrans tow truck, but before anyone could get close to him, he rushed to the edge of the bridge and jumped, police said.

A medical examiner’s spokesman described him as white, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, 177 pounds, with a gray-brown beard. He had a nine-inch scar on his right thigh and a three-inch scar above his right knee.

An eagle and an upside-down “A” was tattooed on his right arm. He had no identification and no note was found, authorities said.

More than 150 people have committed suicide by jumping from the bridge since its completion in 1969.
