Frankly, Madeira, You Belong to Portugal

BRUSSELS —
European Community map makers, struggling to chart the region’s rapidly changing borders, apparently lost track of one tiny Atlantic island.
The vacation island of Madeira, one of the EC’s westernmost territories, has been ruled by Portugal since the 15th Century.
But the EC’s new European map, distributed Tuesday, shows Madeira belonging to Spain.
“It’s a lamentable mistake,” bemoaned one Portuguese diplomat.
