From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A principal who won a national reputation for compassion and dedication at a school in one of New York City’s roughest neighborhoods was shot dead in cross-fire at a housing project where he went to check on the welfare of a student. Patrick Daly, 48, married and the father of three, was “an innocent bystander” in the shootout, a police public information officer said. He was a career educator who often appeared on national television to discuss educational issues.
