I read with interest Steve Hochman’s Pop Eye item of Dec. 6 regarding George Harrison’s receipt of Billboard’s inaugural Century Award, which purported to explore the supposed question “music business insiders” were “asking” regarding whether Harrison’s honor might have been predicated on his actual appearance for the live Billboard Awards telecast.
The key point--which Hochman declined to quote me on--was that any such rumored tactical arrangement was a complete impossibility since, as I informed Hochman, Harrison (as well as his record label, his management office and the Billboard Awards program staff) was notified by letter many months ago that, as the first Century Award honoree, his appearance on the show was “neither a requirement nor an obligation; it is entirely your decision.”
Why air a supposed rumor when it’s confirmed as an impossibility? Bad form.
